Books & Research
A selection of publications and ongoing research by Angelo Baltoyannis, exploring architecture as a system of spatial, cultural, and environmental relationships, with emphasis on fundamental principles, historical continuity, and their relevance to contemporary practice.
Memories of the East
Memories of the East is a photographic and documentary work based on a rediscovered archive assembled by P. Balestra, an otherwise unknown traveler active in the late nineteenth century. The book traces a journey through the Eastern Mediterranean and the Near East, presenting photographs as primary historical evidence rather than illustration.
The narrative unfolds through a close reading of the images themselves—places, dates, routes, and recurring subjects—reconstructing identity indirectly through viewpoint and historical context rather than biography.
The photographs, taken between 1882 and the early twentieth century, document monuments, landscapes, and everyday scenes, revealing the architectural and cultural continuity of the region.
Historical Research Foundation
Historical Research Foundation
A significant part of the historical and architectural work presented here builds upon an extensive body of research developed over decades by architect and researcher George Baltoyannis.
His work established a framework for interpreting Ancient Greek Architecture through spatial, symbolic, and cosmological relationships, forming a foundation for later research and publication within this specific field.
